DraftKings Casino Expands In New Jersey

DraftKings Casino in New Jersey

While DraftKings continues to be known as a daily fantasy sports site to many in the country, in an increasing number of states DraftKings is redefining themselves. DraftKings launched a sportsbook in a couple states and is now as a provider of casino games. After years of shunning the “gambling” label, DraftKings now seems to fully embrace the popular pastime with a mission to be players’ “one-stop sports entertainment destination,” with casino games provided as a compliment to DraftKings’ sports origins.

Over the last couple weeks, a DraftKings online casino games emerged in the company’s New Jersey sportsbook app. DraftKings operates their NJ online casino, as they do their sportsbook, under the Resorts Atlantic City license. It’s the same license that allows The Stars Group (PokerStars, BetStars) to operate in the state.

In mid-December, the DraftKings Casino games launched through an integration into the iOS and Android DraftKings sportsbook app in New Jersey. Originally launching with just blackjack, the DraftKings Casino, expanded their game lineup to include a total of five unique games. The DraftKings Casino in NJ now offers the following games via the DraftKings Sportsbook in the state:

  • Blackjack
  • Roulette
  • Video Poker
  • Cleopatra slot game
  • Wheel of Fortunte slot game

DraftKings sportsbook app users must have version 1.9 of the software in order to play the new games with the new casino games found under the “more” tab in the app.

DraftKings Online Casino and Sportsbook only available in NJ… for now

The DraftKings Casino is only available in New Jersey at this time. Players in other states will first have to wait until their states regulate online gambling or sportsbooks in their states.

2018 turned out to be the year sports betting broke through with seven states regulating wagering after the US Supreme Court declared previous established law as unconstitutional. Sports betting is currently legal in Delaware, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and West Virginia. DraftKings states on their official sportsbook page that the company is looking to expand elsewhere.

“We’re currently working with states that have legislation authorizing sports betting to obtain operating licenses.”

DraftKings is encouraging players in other states to contact their legislators to bring legal sports betting to their states. Interested players can use the form provided by DraftKings to send a quick note to their representatives, which they say takes less than 30 seconds.

In addition to their move into New Jersey, an online DraftKings sportsbook will be going live in West Virginia during 2019 with the potential of others during 2019. A land-based DraftKings sportsbook is also available at the Scarlet Pearl Resort in Mississippi with the potential for New York and Pennsylvania likely in 2019.

Meanwhile, online casino gambling continues to spread at a snail’s pace. After Pennsylvania online gambling was passed in October of 2017, Michigan was the only state to pass legislation in 2018. Unfortunately, legislation was ultimately vetoed by the governor, which effectively puts any progress in the state back by a year. It is unlikely that DraftKings players in any other states — with the possible exception of Pennsylvania — will play online casino games at DraftKings this year.
