Star Fantasy Leagues Overview
Star Fantasy Leagues is a relative newcomer in the daily fantasy sports world, founded in 2013 and infused with a big investment from a billionaire late last year. The site is trending up, and could be a major player in years to come. The interface is as good as there is in the market, and makes it easy to navigate through available contests. The initial deposit bonus clears at a rate faster than any of its competitors.

Players located in the following states are not allowed to play at Star Fantasy Leagues: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Washington.
Star Fantasy Leagues Sports Offered
You can play in contests based on the four major North American sports leagues: NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. No college sports, golf or other sports are offered.
Star Fantasy Leagues Contests and Prize Pools
SFL offers some of the best variety in terms of contests on the market, and that variety comes mostly in the options for the length of contests in which players can compete. While it has the traditional daily contests, it also breaks out two-day, weekly, and season long contests.
The ability to play in real-money season long contests is one of the aspects of SFL’s offerings that really sets it apart. If flexibility in your gameplay is something you value, SFL might be for you. Like traditional season long leagues, you can pick from snake and auction draft leagues, and there are even mock drafts to dial in your draft strategy. Entry fees for these contests range from free to hundreds of dollars.
In the traditional daily contest formats, there are a lot of options:
- Contests where you can double or triple your entry fee if you finish in the top half or the top third of all entries, or even winner-take-all contests.
- There are large-field guaranteed prize pool events, along with contests with smaller, fixed sizes and “heads-up” contests where you play against one other person.
- If daily contests aren’t quick enough for you, SFL also offers “Turbo” contests that include only games in a short timeframe.
- Players can create custom leagues — for both the daily and season long variants — with control over the start time, the number of entries, the buy-in and how the prize pool is distributed. You have a wide array of custom options for season long leagues (see below).
Guaranteed prize pools on the young site are still often small when the NFL is not in season. Last season SFL hosted $10,000 guaranteed prize pool contests when the NFL was playing. Guaranteed contests during the rest of the season top out at hundreds or thousands of dollars.
If you like freerolls, SFL might have more than any other site running on a daily basis, with daily payouts of $10 or and many that award Star Points (more on those later).
Star Fantasy Leagues Interface
The interface is fairly unique in the world of DFS, with almost the entire lobby controlled by clicking buttons that turn on and off filters.
You can filter the lobby based on:
- Sport (NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL)
- Type of league (daily/weekly, turbo, and season long)
- Duration of contest (daily, two-day, weekly)
- Game type (guaranteed prize pools, “sit and go’s,” custom, and private)
- Payout style (standard, double-up, triple-up or winner-take-all)
- Contest size (2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 12, 18, 20, or over 21 players)
With just a couple of clicks, you can easily filter exactly which contests you want to see. There is also a slider that allows you to limit the range of contest buy-ins, and you can also filter for contests that have cash entry fees, Star Point entry fees, or no entry fee.
Star Fantasy Leagues Drafting/Scoring
For the popular salary cap contests, here is a quick rundown of how the different sports are drafted. All salary caps are $100,000.
- NFL: 2 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, TE, Flex, D/ST (Defense/special teams)
- NBA: 3 G, 3 F, C, Utility
- MLB: 2 P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, 3 OF, Utility
- NHL: G, 2 D, 2 RW, 2 LW, 2 C, Flex
When setting a lineup at SFL, you might have more power in sorting and getting stats for players than any other site. Drop-down menus allow you to filter players based on that day’s matchup, and which team they play for. You can also choose to see stats for any of the past three seasons. And if you know what player you are searching for, just type their name in. Tabs allow you to filter by position played. There is also a cool feature that allows you to filter the available player list based on your average remaining salary.
Clicking on a player gives you access to even more statistics, including a game log. Player news and injury updates aren’t readily available at SFL, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If you are doing your homework in setting lineups for other sites, that might give you an edge over players who are setting lineups without the benefit of on-site news updates.
Like most DFS sites worth their salt, live updates for your rosters are available almost instantly.
Currently, there is no app available for SFL, although there are plans to roll out mobile functionality, perhaps as soon as this year.
Star Fantasy Leagues Deposits and Withdrawals
SFL is more cautious in its interpretation of gaming law in many U.S. jurisdictions, meaning you can play there in fewer states than most of its rivals.
SFL takes all major credit cards for deposits — including Discover and American Express — as well as PayPal, Dwolla and Skrill.
Withdrawals must be made electronically — paper checks are not an option. Players can receive funds via PayPal, Dwolla and Skrill.
Also of note: SFL has a higher level of information (such as date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number) required to play for real money than most of its competitors. While some players may be tentative to give out more information, it helps make the site more secure and allows the site to do a better job of protecting everyone’s security.
Star Fantasy Leagues Deposit Bonus
When you sign up for Star Fantasy Leagues with our referral code, your initial deposit will be matched 100%, up to $1,000.
But Star allows players to access their bonus at a much faster rate than its competitors, as it clears at a rate of 20 percent (i.e. a player will get one dollar of his or her bonus unlocked for every five dollars in site fees paid). That is far better than any other site on the market. The bonus is unlocked in $5 increments. The only caveat? The bonus expires after 180 days.
Star Fantasy Leagues Promotions / VIP Program
The VIP program consists of “Star Points” that are awarded every time a player enters a real-money contest. Players receive 10 Star Points for each dollar they pay in contest fees (for instance, a $10 contest would result in receipt of 100 SPs). Points can in turn be used to enter contests that feed into larger contests, or that award prizes.
Star Fantasy Leagues Referral Program
Much like other DFS sites, when you refer players who play in real-money contests, you can earn money from their activity.
Players can receive anywhere from 20 percent to 35 percent of their first-level referrals’ generated entry fees (the low end for site revenue generated under $1,000; the high end for over $5,000 in fees generated). Second-level referrals (referrals from your referrals) always result in a 5 percent earning rate.
Star Fantasy Leagues is a DFS site on the rise. If you enjoy playing season long and daily contests at the same site, SFL is a great option. SFL features an initial bonus that is way easier to unlock than any of its competitors. With a great interface and a variety of contests, SFL is worth checking out.
