There are less than two weeks before the start of the NFL season. If you have been on the sidelines during the NFL preseason now is the time to get those projections ready. Before we do that, its important to familiarize yourself with the scoring systems daily fantasy sports sites use, which are not universal.

The two most popular daily fantasy sports sites going into the 2015 NFL football season are DraftKings and FanDuel. While playing daily fantasy sports on FanDuel and DraftKings is very similar, it is also different in some notable ways.

Roster Size Differences at DraftKings and FanDuel

DraftKings Positions: QB, RB1, RB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE, FLEX (RB/WR/TE) and Team Defense
FanDuel: QB, RB1, RB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE, K, Team Defense

Arguably the biggest difference between FanDuel and DraftKings NFL contests is the roster, because this is affects the foundation of how to build your team.

With both sites, you will draft a nine-man team consisting of one quarterback, two running backs, three wide receivers, one tight end and one team defense. The one difference is that FanDuel features a kicker position while DraftKings has a FLEX position that can be filled with a running back, wide receiver or tight end.

Having a kicker position on the roster increases the variance of the games due to the fact that the position is relatively unpredictable — for a sharp daily fantasy sports player — compared to the positions within the flex position. This gives sharper players who do their due diligence a bit more of an advantage at DraftKings versus FanDuel.
